![]() Once it is taken off the image will slowly fade out and disappear. This natural process, purely photographical in its essence, cannot be fixed: the image is getting clearer the longer the negative is attached to the leaf. During the whole duration of the exhibition the light entering through the gallery’s windows will hit the leafs after having been filtered through the photo negatives that are attached to the plants. By utilising the process of plant photosynthesis Mayer manages to develop photographic images on the leafs of banana plants. For this installation he chose the 4 images that most obviously dealt with light as a topic: seagulls welcoming the morning sun a person’s back being lit by the reflection of sunlight from a street sign the evening sun painting a picturesque landscape in soft colors a person being photographed with the very last light before the total darkness of the night takes over.Īn image in the process of its making is what can be observed in the work that occupies the space next to the windows. It was only later that he started wondering if the effect of having spent so much time in a historical photo exhibition might have unconsciously influenced his own picture making. Christian Mayer made these photos in the days after having documented the Vernon collection and without the intention of using them artistically. However the effect of simulating another space in the gallery is consistently interrupted by white paint covering parts of the wallpaper, defining a neutral background for a selection of photographs. By doing so the artist refers to the historical framework of photography itself while simultaneously pointing to a perspective the spectator is not supposed to take: the photographic image is endangered once it is materialised, it has to be protected. By blowing up these photos until they reach the 1:1 scale of the original space, Mayer “pastes” the LACMA space into the space of the Gallery: thus one interior becomes a quote conveyed into another. Documenting the famous Vernon photo collection after the show had closed for visitors, Mayer was mainly interested in the fact that the most sensitive photos amongst them, the saltprints, were covered with a special screen to protect them from light. The walls of the bright space are covered with wallpapers printed from photographs that the artist made at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Consequently the artist devides the gallery space into two parts: one being bright lit by spotlights and daylight entering through the windows, the other one being almost completely dark. Light as being both creator and annihilator of the photographic image is the main narrative of Christian Mayer’s show “Threshold and Inertia” at pf Gallery for Photography.
